What is Xanthelasma?
Xanthelasma is the formation of yellowish lesions due to the accumulation of fat on the inner surface of the eyelids. This condition typically appears on the inner surface of the eyelid, between the white part of the eye and the roots of the eyelashes. Xanthelasma is usually painless and does not cause any visible discomfort, but in some cases, it may cause itching or irritation.
Since xanthelasma develops as a result of fat accumulation, it is often associated with lipid metabolism or cholesterol levels. It can also be linked to the aging process and typically occurs after the age of 40. In some cases, xanthelasma may be a sign of underlying medical conditions such as high cholesterol, diabetes, or liver disease.
The treatment of xanthelasma is usually cosmetic and aims to provide symptomatic relief. Treatment options may include laser surgery, cryotherapy (cold therapy), electrodessication (burning lesions using electric current), and surgical excision. However, it is important to evaluate underlying medical conditions before diagnosing xanthelasma.
While xanthelasma is generally not a serious health concern, it can sometimes be a sign of underlying medical conditions. Therefore, if you notice any abnormal lesions on your eyelids, it is important to consult an ophthalmologist or dermatologist.
