What is Lichen disease?
Lichen disease refers to an infection or inflammatory condition that occurs on the skin. It has different types, such as lichen planus and lichen sclerosus.
- Lichen Planus: Lichen planus is characterized by itchy, flat or raised, purple-colored lesions that appear on various parts of the body, typically wrists, ankles, genital area, and mouth. The exact cause of lichen planus is not known, but it may be associated with immune system issues or certain medications.
- Lichen Sclerosus: Lichen sclerosus presents as thin, white, itchy lesions on the skin, typically in the genital area, anus, hands, or mouth. This condition is more commonly seen in postmenopausal women but can also occur in men and children. The exact cause of lichen sclerosus is unknown, but hormonal changes and immune system issues may play a role.
Treatment for both types aims to alleviate symptoms. Treatments may include topical corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, and antihistamines. However, complete resolution cannot be guaranteed in both cases, and treatments focus on managing symptoms. Therefore, it’s important to consult with a dermatologist when diagnosed with lichen disease.
