This plasma, obtained from the patient’s blood, is injected into the affected area with a small needle or cannula at specific intervals. Platelets are cells that initiate wound healing throughout the body and their presence triggers the wound healing cycle, stimulating the production of new cells. While there are no stem cells in PRP solution, it activates the development of new cells by stimulating the stem cells present in the injected areas. PRP rejuvenates cells in the skin and subcutaneous tissues.

PRP therapy is used in various fields of medicine, including dermatology, for skin rejuvenation, wrinkle reduction, correction of spots, uneven skin tone, treatment of dark circles under the eyes, elimination of acne and scar marks, treatment of skin cracks, and hair loss. Adding PRP to spot treatments ensures better and longer-lasting results.

In PRP therapy, blood is taken from the individual and placed into special tubes, which are then placed in a centrifuge spinning at high speed. The centrifuge must spin at a certain speed and for a certain duration to obtain plasma rich in platelets. PRP can be applied to the entire face, under-eye area, eye area, neck, décolleté, back of the hands, and scalp. Local anesthetic creams used on areas other than the scalp before the procedure ensure a more comfortable procedure. PRP therapy is usually performed in 3-4 sessions at intervals of 2-4 weeks. Initial results of the procedure start to appear within 2-3 weeks. Maintenance sessions every 6-12 months ensure the permanence of the effect.

PRP THERAPY FOR HAIR LOSS

In androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness (also in female pattern baldness), PRP therapy is an FDA-approved treatment. It can be used alone or in combination with mesotherapy treatment for hair loss. When applied in three sessions monthly, success rate is high. Results can be sustained with maintenance sessions. It can also be applied after hair transplantation. The effects on hair include reduction in hair loss and increase in hair diameter, which means thickening of thinning hair. These effects begin to be seen after the second month.

Who Cannot Undergo PRP Therapy?

– Individuals with a history of cancer
– Those using blood thinners
– Individuals with anemia and blood disorders
– Those with autoimmune diseases
– Individuals with infections in the area where the procedure will be performed
– Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers

Possible Side Effects of PRP Therapy

Since PRP therapy is entirely derived from the patient’s own blood, there are no expected side effects. However, there may be bruising and swelling lasting a few days after the procedure, which can be alleviated with ice application.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is plasma enriched with platelets (thrombocytes) and growth factors obtained from the patient’s own blood.
